CyclePRINT provides visualisations and analysis on cycling in your city. Understanding cycling, cycling behaviour and your cycling network performance, helps you understand how to use the power of cycling as a transport mode to unlock your city.

CyclePRINT is an easy to use online cycle network performance toolkit which translates your GPS data into policy relevant insights and enable its’ users to analyse current behaviour, investigate future network enhancements and monitor bicycle network performance in a more detailed way. The results are insights in the actual cycling behaviour in your city or region.

Urbanisation is a growing global trend, challenging cities increasingly to think about accessibility, liveability, sustainability and safety. Other trends are the upcoming e-bike and speed-pedelecs providing more comfort and extending the range of an acceptable cycling trip and the growing importance of health for humans. In order to deal with these challenges and use the trends cities need to understand where, when and how to take measures and initiate programs. Understanding the current cycling experience, application of cycling promotion and the right infrastructural design changes, will get people out of cars on their bikes. CyclePRINT provides all the tools to import collected data from various sources, like community-apps, cycling-apps, loop detection and traffic lights. Once stored in its database CyclePRINT is easy to use and allows for all sorts of visualisations and analysis, web based, anytime, from any location.

  • Real bicycle speeds: section speeds including waiting times, and relative speed (bottlenecks)
  • A picture of bicycle traffic movements at various moments of the week and during the day
  • The various routes of all cyclists that make use of a specific stretch of road (selected link)
  • The detour factor between the actual route compared with straight-line distance and compared with the shortest route.
  • Isochrones for travel time, the actual distance to be covered from a certain area within a certain period of time
  • Travel times, traffic volumes and choice of travel modes over a day (hour), over a week (per week day) and per distance category
  • Potential bicycle accessibility between residential areas and working areas
  • Number of potential new cyclists as a result of changes in bicycle infrastructure

Data Analytics

To be able to carry out these analyses, GPS location data should first be collected. Various collection methods are possible: public recruitment and collection via a smart phone app, taking a random sample, interested volunteers or paid workers To transform GPS data into policy-relevant data, quite a few steps are necessary. On the basis of GPS data, for example, the mode of transportation is determined and the data filtered (invaluable measurements and removing beginning/end of route with regard to privacy). Subsequently, the routes are divided into interim destinations and linked to the OpenStreetMap road network. By interpolating starting and finishing times, the total travel time including waiting time is distributed over the stretches of road, and thus a correct distance speed is calculated. Afterwards, the shortest route is determined by a bicycle route planner, and the detour factors are thus calculated. The database that is generated in this way is ready to be consulted with the online viewer.
